Your Guide to Back Pain Relief
Osteoporosis of the Spine
One of the most common conditions effecting back and spinal pain is Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis itself is not a spinal condition. It is a degenerative condition that decreases bone mineral density. Without density, your bones become more at risk for fractures and are unable to maintain its structure.
What is Osteoporosis of the Spine?
Osteoporosis tends to have its most visible effects on the spine. Osteoporosis causes small vertical compression fractures which cause the spine to weaken, ultimately leading to the appearance of being hunched over. These fractures and micro-fractures can also cause significant, long term back pain.

Causes of Osteoporosis
Many of the causes of Osteoporosis are unpreventable, caused by genetics, age, etc. Some of these causes include:
- Age – Osteoporosis is common in adults over the age of 75.
- Gender – Women are far more likely to suffer from Osteoporosis, especially after menopause.
- Race – Those of Asian and European descent are far more at risk for Osteoporosis.
- Genetics – Several genes are risk factors for Osteoporosis.
- Height – Smaller individuals tend to suffer from Osteoporosis more than taller individuals.
Osteoporosis Prevention
Because many of the causes of Osteoporosis are unpreventable, there is no way to know or guarantee that you can prevent the onset of Osteoporosis. However, there are some causes that can potentially be altered to reduce your risk.
- Diet – Protein, Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium and other minerals may improve bone density and either prevent the onset of Osteoporosis, or reduce the severity of its symptoms.
- Exercise – Surprisingly, although there are some studies that show exercise is useful for bone density, excessive exercise may actually cause Osteoporosis to occur.
- Risky Behaviors – Smoking and alcohol abuse are both known to increase the likelihood or severity of Osteoporosis.
