Your Guide to Back Pain Relief

Scoliosis

Picture
The spine is a very important part of the human body, and in its normal form, it is straight when seen from the front. However, in a person suffering from Scoliosis, the person’s spine becomes curvaceous. The physical deformity of the spine is a complex three dimensional phenomenon. However, this deformity is visible in X rays and the spine resembles the letter “C” or “S” rather than a straight line. Around 7 million people are affected with this disorder in the United States alone.

Unlike other conditions that usually affect people above a certain age, Scoliosis is known to occur in younger people too. As a matter of fact, approximately 2 to 3 percent of 16 year olds suffer from some level of Scoliosis. For reasons that have not yet been completely understood by scientists, women appear to be more susceptible than men to Scoliosis.

Different types of Scoliosis

There are a number of different types of Scoliosis, and the prominent among them are neuro muscular Scoliosis, congenital Scoliosis, degenerative Scoliosis, and idiopathic Scoliosis. The neuro muscular Scoliosis is observed in people suffering with spina bifida and is caused primarily due to abnormal muscles and nerves.

Causes and Symptoms of Scoliosis

Congenital Scoliosis occurs in a child and is present right since birth. Bone abnormality usually leads to such a condition in children. However, degenerative Scoliosis can occur due to a wide variety of reasons and is a result of other physical conditions. For example, the patient may suffer from a bone collapse, which could either be due to an injury or illness. For some people, osteoporosis also can lead to degenerative Scoliosis.
The most common yet least understood type of Scoliosis is the idiopathic Scoliosis. People commonly believe that this is inherited through the genes. This form is most common in kids and could set in anywhere between the ages of 10 to 16. As the child grows, the deformity worsens but does not progress into adulthood.

Treatments for Scoliosis

Idiopathic Scoliosis needs to be continuously monitored through physical examinations accompanied by X rays. Bracing is advised for children whose spine curves at anywhere between 25 and 40 degrees, especially if the child has not stepped out of the growing period. Braces do not cure Scoliosis but merely prevent the condition from aggravating further. In some cases, the braces may seem to reduce the curvature, but this is just a temporary effect. The spine returns to its original position once the braces are removed. Surgery is expensive and is advised only if the curve in the spine is greater than 40 degrees.
