Your Guide to Back Pain Relief

Spinal Conditions

Picture
Your spine plays one of the most important roles in your body – and as such is one of the most common causes of general pain, especially in your back and neck. There are several different types of spinal conditions that may affect you at some point during the course of your life. Below is a list of the most common types of spinal conditions.

Common Types of Spinal Conditions.
  • Osteoporosis – Osteoporosis is characterized by the gradual degeneration of bone density. When this occurs in your spine, it can cause your spine to bend, creating, which gives the appearance of a humped back.
  • Herniated disc – Your spine is made up of discs. Herniated discs occur when an inner disc breaches an outer disc and hits your spinal nerve, causing pain and discomfort in your back and occasionally throughout your body.
  • Spinal Stenosis – Spinal stenosis occurs when your spinal canal starts to narrow. The narrowing may be caused by a variety of different spinal issues, and can cause pain, stiffness, cramping and headaches.
  • Other common types of spinal conditions include a slipped disc (which is related to herniated discs) and sciatica (which is a series of symptoms that affect specific nerves in your body).

Less Common Types of Spinal Conditions

The above list represents some of the most common types of spinal conditions. Most back pain is caused by one of the common types of spinal conditions. However, there are some much rarer types of spinal conditions including, but not limited to:
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Avascular Necrosis
  • Burst Fractures
  • Cancer
  • Chiari Malformation
  • Coccydynia
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Discitis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Fixed Sagittal Imbalance
  • Flatback Syndrome
  • Kyphosis
  • Lordosis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Pediatric Spinal Cord Tumors
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Radiculopathy
  • Scoliosis
  • Spina Bifida
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Synovial Cysts
  • Syringomyelia
  • Tethered Spinal Cord
  • Trigeminal Neuralgia

All of these are rarer causes of spinal conditions, and most are found at birth, usually due to an obvious and often genetic birth defect.

Causes of Back Pain

Although all of these types of spinal conditions may contribute to back pain, it is possible to have back pain that is not the result of a specific spinal condition at all. Pinched nerves, muscular irritation – even something as simple as poor posture may cause significant back pet. Yet chronic, severe back pain may represent a more serious condition.
