Your Guide to Back Pain Relief

Spinal Joint Dysfunction

Picture
There are many different types of back pain. Sometimes back pain feels generalized to an entire area (lower back, upper back, etc.). Other times the pain itself is more localized in a specific location. When the pain is localized, it may have a specific cause. One such cause is Spinal Joint Dysfunction.

Spinal joint dysfunction – often referred to as subluxation of the spine – occurs when a specific joint in your spine struggles with range of motion, either because it has become stiff from movement or is positioned out of place from where it is expected to be in a healthy spine. Spinal joint dysfunction can cause persistent pain that often needs professional attention to address.

Causes of Spinal Joint Dysfunction

Spinal joint dysfunction can have many different causes – and in some cases the cause itself may not be well known. Most experts put the causes of spinal joint dysfunction into one of three categories:
  • Physical – Physical causes include repetitive spinal motion, poor posture, weak muscles in the spine, trauma, heavy lifting and uncomfortable sleeping positions.
  • Chemical – It’s believed that some foods and the ingestion of chemicals in most meals can cause abnormal joint function and mobility, causing spinal joint dysfunction.
  • Psychological – Stress, anxiety, and other emotional issues are also believed to cause spinal joint dysfunction, especially when combined with physical or chemical causes.
Spinal joint dysfunction may be due to physical damage, nerves that are not sending the proper messages to joints, weak tissues, disease, or muscle tenderness.

Symptoms of Spinal Joint Dysfunction

Spinal joint dysfunction can have a variety of different symptoms. Some people experience localized pain, while others may experience a variety of different symptoms, including:
  • General or localized back soreness.
  • Impeded spinal mobility.
  • Muscle toughness or weakness.
  • Balance issues.
  • Joint discomfort.
  • Tingling in the back of extremities.
Some people have also reported headaches and low energy. Symptoms tend to vary, due primarily to the effect the spine has other joints and muscles. Some people also report discomfort in the neck and hips. An expert may be needed to help gauge whether your pain is due to spinal joint dysfunction or another back health issue.
